FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We are honored to host the 1999 Conference of the Association of Medical Schools in Europe, in Jerusalem, Israel, September 5 - 7, 1999.

In 1999 we will be celebrating the jubilee of the medical school in Jerusalem, which was founded jointly by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Hadassah Medical Organization.

During these 50 years, about 3500 medical students have graduated from our institution, and we are proud of the way they represent our school worldwide. Since the foundation of the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School, which was the first one in Israel, another three medical schools have been established - in Tel Aviv, Haifa and Beersheva - and all four of them maintain the highest standards of medical education.

In recent years, there have been many changes in the concept of medical education. The existing amount of scientific medical data is vast, and we can teach our students only the fundamentals of basic and clinical sciences. We are constantly questioning which topics to teach, and how to teach the topics we have chosen. The AMSE 1999 Conference will provide an opportunity for the international exchange of ideas on the cutting edge of research, medical education, administration of medical schools, and for the exploration of a variety of controversies.

The AMSE 1999 Conference is timed for the early fall, when the weather in Jerusalem is most pleasant. The city of Jerusalem is unique, historically and religiously, with its very special atmosphere. Please plan to attend, to present your work, share your ideas, and exchange information with your colleagues in this exceptional setting.

Looking forward to welcoming you to Jerusalem
in 1999.

Yours sincerely,

Gadi Glaser, M.D. Jacob Pe'er, M.D.
